Insightful wins NASA contract to develop Visual Mining software

Ground-breaking Image Mining Solution Delivers Powerful Image Search and Categorization

SEATTLE - February 5, 2002 - Insightful Corporation (NASDAQ: IFUL), a leading provider of enterprise software solutions for data analysis, announced today that it has been selected by NASA to develop and enhance software for automated categorization and retrieval of images. The project will help scientists and analysts at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), quickly identify patterns, relationships and changes in satellite imagery. Insightful will enhance its image mining technology, VisiMine, by integrating NASAs powerful multispectral image interpretation technology.

"Two years ago we selected Insightful to develop the VisiMine platform for image mining. At NASA, we face the daunting prospect of having to deal with databases of unprecedented size and complexity. We contracted Insightful again because we believe that Insightful can perform effective technology transfer and deliver superior solutions for image mining of large databases to communities of users inside and outside NASA," said Dr. James Tilton, NASA project manager.

VisiMine provides a comprehensive workbench for image information mining. The solution applies industry-leading statistical, feature extraction, data mining and image processing methodologies to deliver a precise, high-performance visual search engine. VisiMine automatically organizes and retrieves multispectral satellite images according to their distinct features, including spectral endmember signature, microtexture, macrotexture, shapes, orientation and spatial relationships.
