Microsoft Online Services generate huge amount of data ranging from user interaction logs, web documents, user feedback, to system performance data. The data contains valuable information for building the #1 search engine to serve people�s information needs. The data is also critical for making appropriate business decisions. The main challenge is to effectively process the data, discover information and put it into action. We are developing advanced and practical data mining, and machine learning techniques to derive information to understand user intent, discover patterns to improve search relevance and results ranking, detect and filter bot traffic, spam, and noise, and measure relevance and user satisfaction quickly and effectively, identify weak points of the search engine, discover system performance, measure/understand the health of the online business, and many more. We also work on techniques to manage and process petabyttes of data efficiently and effectively. Our Data Mining pipelines use Cosmos, a highly-scalable, highly-available distributed storage/processing infrastructure to collect massive data and in conjunction of SQL server and SQL reporting service to perform analysis on the data and expose results to business teams and leadership teams.

Currently our Data Mining pipelines serve as a platform to provide services to Search executives, business teams, and feature teams. Our vision is to expand the services to Online Service Division wide, including AdCenter and MSN. This is a terrific opportunity for an up and coming test lead to join a team whose mission is expanding significantly.

Responsibilities of the test lead

• Develop the test plans for the Data Mining pipelines:
  • Own schedule and estimation of test work
  • Ensure the right test automation and test coverage in place
• Develop new and cutting edge test techniques for highly complex Data Mining pipelines
• Build a strong team of highly motivated individual contributors
• Effectively work with Dev and PM teams on the following areas:
  • Review quality metrics on a daily basis and drive progress on new releases
  • Monitor health of live site and provide great quality of service
• Provide feedback on testability during design reviews
• Drive improvements to the quality of data and actions that can be taken by feature teams
• Contribute towards the overall test strategy and business direction of the Data Mining team

• Experience shipping at least two large commercial software product
• Experience or interest in data analysis and business intelligence
• Solid design, coding, and debugging skills (C#/C++/C, SQL )
• 6+ years experience testing software products
• Able to attract, retain and grow highly inspired employees
• Eagerness to do hands on work means actually using the product like a customer, finding bugs, writing test automation, reviewing test source code and other similar work
• B.S./M.S. in computer engineering or science desired
