Subject: KDD-09: Nights and Weekend Highlights

The annual ACM SIGKDD conference is the premier international forum for data mining researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to share their ideas, research results and experiences. For the first time KDD will leave America and come to Europe. KDD-09 will be held in Paris, France, from June 28th to July 1st and will feature keynote presentations, oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, tutorials, panels, exhibits, demonstrations, and the KDD Cup competition.

For those who are unable to attend the full program of KDD-09, the organizers are introducing a new registration option besides full participation: "Workshops, Tutorials, and Evenings" (or, "Nights and Weekend"). This enables you to participate all day Sunday, for the workshops and tutorials, as well as the evenings (5pm+ Sunday-Tuesday), which feature invited industry talks, exhibits, receptions, dinners, and technical poster sessions. (It omits, however, the full technical program during the 3 days, Mon-Wed.)

In particular, we would like to highlight:

  • the evening reception at Hotel de Ville where awards for the KDD Cup will be presented. The KDD Cup this year is focused on predicting customer scores from large marketing databases from the French Telecom company, Orange, who is sponsoring the prizes for winners of the KDD Cup.
  • the telco industry session, including the invited talks:
    • Alain Glickman (Orange), People aren't always doing what they are saying. Perception versus Reality
    • Alejandro Jaimes Larrarte (Telefonica), The Telecom Revolution: Where does KDD go from here?
    • Edouard Servan Schreiber (Teradata), Social network analysis for telco operators
  • the general industry session, including the invited talks:
    • Mijail Kabadjov (European Commission - Joint Research Centre), The Europe Media Monitor family of news analysis applications
    • Antonia de Medinaceli (Elder Research), Organizational Traits leading to High ROI for Data Mining
    • Ken Reed (Red Point), Very High Value Analytics for Business
    • Rob Cooley (Optimine), Improving Online Marketing Performance through Data Mining and Optimization
More details on the highlights of the program included in the "Nights and Weekend" registration are given below.

Of course, if you can, you are welcome to register for the full program of the conference, which features an exciting technical program, including the talks by five distinguished invited speakers:

  • Ravi Kumar (Yahoo! Research), Mining Web Logs: Applications and Challenges
  • Ashok N. Srivastava (NASA), Data Mining at NASA: from Theory to Applications
  • David J. Hand (Imperial College), Mismatched Models, Wrong Results, and Dreadful Decisions: On choosing appropriate data mining tools
  • Heikki Mannila (Helsinki University of Technology), Randomization Methods in Data Mining
  • Stanley Wasserman (Indiana University), Network Science: An Introduction to Recent Statistical Approaches
