Subject: Call for proposals on hosting the KDD-2010 conference

KDD-2010: The 16th annual ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining is the premier international forum for data mining and knowledge discovery researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to share their ideas, research results and experiences. The KDD series of conferences normally feature keynote presentations, oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, tutorials, panels, exhibits, demonstrations, and the KDD Cup competition.

The KDD conference series is the largest gathering of people who seek to learn, network, or contribute to the field. The conference attracts between 700 and 1000 attendees and is considered by far the most competitive and prestigious forum for publication of new scientific contributions, best practices in applied settings, and tutorials and workshops. KDD is an official ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) conference and is administered by ACM and the SIGKDD (the special Interest Group of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining). The 15th Annual Conference, KDD-2009 will be held in Paris June 28-July 1, 2009. KDD-2010 will be held in August 2010, but timing is flexible depending on location chosen.

The SIGKDD is interested in determining the location of future KDD conferences, starting with KDD-2010 and KDD-2011. Since KDD-09 is taking place in Europe, there is a preference for North America as a location for the 2010 conference, but we are open to consider any locations of interest around the world. The requirements are that the location be easily accessible and serviced by a nearby major international airport as a large number of delegates will travel from around the world to attend the conference. Facilities able to comfortably host an audience of 700 to 1000 people are a must as well.

If you are interested in serving as a host for the KDD-2010 conference, please submit your proposal by email to sigkdd2010@yahoo.com by December 15th, 2008. All proposals for hosting will be carefully considered. The selected hosting individual, organization, or group will get the following rights and responsibilities:
1. Appointing a Local Arrangements Chair as a member of the organizing committee
2. Nominate a General Chair for KDD-10, subject to the confirmation by SIGKDD executive committee. 3. Support from ACM staff and KDD in staff in making local arrangements, facilities contracts, insurance, etc
4. Full coverage of conference hosting expenses as well as related expenses per budget approved by the SIGKDD Executive Committee
5. Public relations and press rights to promote the geographic location and the contributions of the hosting organization to the KDD community and conference

Proposals for hosting KDD-2010 should be submitted by December 15, 2008 via email to sigkdd2010@yahoo.com. Submitted proposal should include the following:

  • A specification of the hosting entity (individual or organizing) including names, titles and short bios of members of the hosting team
  • Nomination of Local Arrangement chair along with a short bio
  • Description of the locale and proposed conference facility to be used
  • A reasonably accurate estimate of the costs to lease facility and any other major local cost requirements
  • A description of nearby hotels to house attendees during the conference period with an estimated cost per night of lodging
  • Any materials supporting the choice of location, including:
    • local attractions
    • local universities or talent centers
    • local related industries or companies
    • any special entertainment opportunities
A selection committee will carefully review proposals and make the final selection. The committee will be chaired by Usama Fayyad, SIGKDD Secretary/Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee. Proposals will receive notification of the final decisions by January 20, 2009.

The KDD conference is the best way to attract a large talent pool and to achieve very high visibility in this growing and important technical and business community. Besides the local economic benefits of attracting attendees from around the world, the conference plays a huge role in attracting talent, students, and help the hosting region establish important economic and technical ties to the strategic area of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases.

If you have further inquiries, please email usama_fayyad@yahoo.com. We look forward to receiving your proposals no later than December 15, 2008 via email to: sigkdd2010@yahoo.com

Secretary/Treasurer, ACM SIGKDD
