Launched as 'The New Force' in banking in 2001, as a result of the merger between Halifax plc and The Bank of Scotland, HBOS represents a major and distinctive competitor in the UK financial services market. It is now one of the top ten organisations in the FTSE 100. We have a unique range of businesses, some of which are trusted household names, many of which are market leaders.

With assets of over �440 billion and 22 million customers, HBOS is the UK's largest mortgage and savings provider as well as being a major player in the provision of new current accounts, personal loans and credit cards in the UK.

The Retail division delivered profits of �2.3bn in 2005, up 8%. Key to this performance is the Decision Science team of predictive modellers who are vital in optimising business performance through providing commercially focused statistical solutions.

The Decision Science team are now looking for people in multiple locations Leeds, Cardiff and Halifax with statistical or engineering backgrounds who are willing to apply their intellect to challenging problems within the Retail Banking environment.

We have a number of vacancies available, representing a mixture of opportunities across Marketing and Credit Risk and requiring different levels of experience.

What Are We Looking For?

A dedicated, well motivated and result-driven self-starter who can effectively work with others in a multi-disciplinary and fast moving environment to deliver high quality decision science solutions in a timely manner. Specifically someone who:

  • A PHD or Masters in a quantitative discipline in statistics, mathematics, operations research, economics or engineering.
  • Has strong information technology skills, likely to include SAS or similar analytical software packages.
  • Can demonstrate good knowledge of data mining, statistics, simulation, optimisation and modelling (e.g. regression; stochastic processes; CHAID; clustering, artificial intelligence, etc.)
  • Shows creativity to think outside the box, and challenge the status quo.
Key Job Attributes / Requirements

The role can be summarised as (but is not limited to):

  • Lead or actively contribute to decision science modelling / deep-dive analytic projects. Act as, or support, a project manager (where required) to ensure project is properly scoped, specified, planned, executed and implemented.
  • Keep up to speed on the development of cutting-edge decision science techniques and the industrial best practices in applying such methods.
  • Regularly monitor the performance of predictive models, recommending and initiating model redevelopment when required.
  • Share best practices and provide advice on statistical or other quantitative modelling techniques to other areas within the HBOS group where appropriate.
