Data checks on drug cheats

MEDICARE and the Australian Customs Service are using data mining to catch medication cheats shipping subsidised medicines overseas.

Advance warning from computer systems is enabling them stop suspect passengers at major airports.

Data mining technology from SAS and visualisation software from NetMap Analytics is being used to profile passengers, with data from hundreds of thousands of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) claims aggregated with census, medical and pharmacy information to identify suspect destinations, flights and even times of year.
