ICDM 2005, the fifth conference in this series, has continued the tradition of providing an international forum for scientists, engineers, and practitioners to exchange and share their experience, new ideas, and latest research results on the design, analysis and implementation of data mining theory, systems and applications. The conference drew researchers and application developers from a wide range of data mining related areas such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, databases and data warehousing, data visualization, knowledge-based systems and high performance computing. This time around the conference committee received, a record high, 630 submissions from 1,702 authors and 52 countries all around the world.
