Based on 216 votes of 130 voters, the most popular application areas were:

• Banking, 13%
• Direct Marketing/Fundraising, 9%
• Fraud Detection, 9%
• Scientific data, 9%
• Bioinformatics/Biotech, 8%

Compared to 2003 poll on Data Mining Applications, the percentages are surprisingly similar for most areas.

The biggest gainers in popularity were:

• Manufacturing, from 1.9% in 2003 to 4.2% of applications in 2004
• Other, from 4.5% to 8.8%
• Security, from 2.2% to 3.7%
• Investment/Stocks, from 3.0% to 4.2%

• Travel, from 1.9% in 2003 to 0.9% in 2004
• Retail, from 6.3% to 4.2%
• Telecommunications, from 7.8% to 5.6%
