Subject: EPSRC PhD Studentship in Computer Vision at Kingston University, UK

Digital Imaging Research Centre (DIRC) School of Computing and Information Systems, Kingston University, Kingston upon Thames, UK

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on an EPSRC-funded computer vision project within the Digital Image Research Centre at Kingston University, London.

"Modelling the Co-ordinated Activities of Players in Sports Data Sets"

Competitive sports involve player interactions that are structured around patterns of play known as tactics and strategies. These are difficult to model because they involve more than one player in temporally extended co-ordinated activities. This project will develop models for capturing activities, and evaluate these in terms of their ability to find principle modes of play, to predict moves based on learnt sequences, and to synthesise plausible sequences of action. Automatically extracting models of activity will aid the automatic annotation of video broadcasts, and also enable the generation of realistic computer gaming of sports. (Interested candidates should mail their CV or resume to Dr Ahmed Shihab, a.shihab at kingston.ac.uk)

Eligibility

Suitable candidates should hold at least an upper second or first class honours degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or a masters degree in a similar discipline. Candidates should ideally have some experience in designing and implementing image processing software. The University pays a stipend of approximately 12,500 pa as well as fees. Note, students who are UK or EU citizens will not expect to incur any further study-related expenses. Other citizens must have alternative sources of funds to cover the difference in tuition fees of about 5000 per year.

Kingston University is located in the pleasant suburb of Kingston upon Thames, just 25 minutes from central London. With about 17,000 students, it is the largest provider of higher education in south west London. The Digital Imaging Research Centre at Kingston University was created to integrate and enhance research excellence in computer vision, medical imaging and remote sensing across the University. Please visit the group's web site at http://www.kingston.ac.uk/dirc for further information.
