NewsFrom: Gregory Piatetsky-ShapiroDate: June 11, 2001 Subject: Poll Results: Clustering is the most frequent Data Mining Task The latest KDnuggets Poll asked: What types of analysis did you do in the past 12 months: The results (multiple choices allowed) indicate that a wide variety of tasks is performed by data miners. Clustering was by far the most frequent (22%), followed by Direct Marketing (14%), and Cross-Sell Models (12%). More novel types of analysis such as Text mining, Personalization, and Audio/Visual mining received about 5% of votes. Since clustering is usually done to find a few big segments, this suggests that personalization efforts are still in their infancy and traditional, segment based direct marketing is probably still prevails.
