Top 10 in Data Mining

We look at top 10 research keywords, authors, publications, organizations, and more. Which keywords have grown the most in the last 5 years?

Date:

Microsoft Academic Search Microsoft Academic Research provides rankings for many topics, and I recently checked their rankings for data mining.

The top 10 keywords for "Data Mining" (all-time) were

KeywordsPublicationsCitations
Data Mining 7343 116420
Machine Learning 2568 68086
Association Rule 1985 52838
Indexation 2675 46307
Information Retrieval 1635 42853
World Wide Web 657 39364
Support Vector Machine 1319 33604
Cluster Algorithm 1747 32604
Efficient Algorithm 928 23241
Search Engine 1218 22858

while for the top keywords for "Data Mining" (last 5 years) are

Cluster Algorithm 858 2381
Web Search 329 1968
Web Pages 579 1957

We can clearly see the growing importance of social network and large-scale analysis (the research term for "Big Data"), and declining importance of "Association Rule" and "Support Vector Machine".

Other interesting results include top authors in Data Mining (all-time), ranked by H-Index

  1. Jiawei Han, H-Index=69
  2. Philip S. Yu, 47
  3. Rakesh Agrawal, 46
  4. Christos Faloutsos, 39
  5. Heikki Mannila, 36
  6. Eamonn J. Keogh, 35
  7. George Karypis, 35
  8. Jian Pei, 34
  9. Padhraic Smyth, 34
  10. Hans-Peter Kriegel, 33

  10. Tao Li

We note amazing productivity (and students) of veteran researchers Philip S. Yu, Jiawei Han, and Christos Faloutsos. Jian Pei went from #8 to #4 - very impressive. Also watch for great results from younger researchers who made into top 10 in the last 5 years:
Xuemin Lin, Jure Leskovec, Charu C. Aggarwal, Zhi-Hua Zhou, Yehuda Koren, and Tao Li.
